I'm still not sure how to feel about this anime. The melodrama was to the point that it was super cringe worthy and made it difficult to watch at times. Some of the characters were extremely underdeveloped. The plot and ending was predictable. You would think a anime like this shouldn't be rated over a 5 and yet...

There was sort of a special feel to it. It may have been the music which is by the far the anime's biggest strength. It may have been the few well executed emotional scenes that really made you sympathize with the main characters. Truth be told, I don't know what it is. But even though I saw the ending coming from a mile away, I was still genuinely saddened by it. I guess if I was to spin a analogy on it, this anime was just like the characters, kids who find themselves dealing with an adult situation. Things were not always handled well, a lot of time it was sloppy, but it still managed to push through and make something of itself. And I guess there is a certain beauty to that.

I give it a 8/10.

Saw this death flag coming since ep 5. I noticed kaori's hair color started to fade a little bit every episode after towa hall concert. So that was an indicator as well. Very lovable characters. This series was an emotional roller coaster. Made a grown ass man cry ;_; R.I.P kaori

Much as I enjoyed this show, there is at least one thing that I found annoying: I mean how much they talk during the musical performances, especially Kousei's. It made me feel like the director didn't expect the viewers to be able to tell the difference between a mechanical rendition of the piece, a bad one, and a truly inspired one, and so had to have someone "translating" the music - very loudly while it is playing. See for example episode 18 (Nagi's school concert): even if you're deaf or watching it with the sound turned off you know what's happening with the music, which is just as well because half of the time you can't hear it.

Now, I don't have much of an ear for music, and I can barely distinguish between a good and a lousy performance, but at least I would have liked to be given the chance to listen to it and decide for myself if it reached me or not. There are also lots of visual means for conveying the same message with camera shots, facial expressions and so on, without interfering with the music. I'm sure Nagi's concert, again, could have been a lot more effective if they had just let the music and image do their job. Not that there aren't pure musical moments, most of them excellent, but I'm still left with the impression that the director should have known better when to stop explaining.

Comparisons are unfair, and of course I'm only talking about the approach to the performances, but I much prefer Hibike Euphonium in this regard: there at least people have the decency to wait until they finish playing to offer criticism. The best example of this is the second trumpet audition (S1E11): it's not that the director leaves it all to the music, because our response is very much guided by the emotional responses of the rest of the girls, the performers' expressions and stances, the camera, etc. Nobody needs to say anything. But imagine what it would have been like if you had heard Yuuko thinking while they were playing "No way, Kaori plays it perfectly but though I hate to admit it Reina's trumpet has real soul" or words to that effect.

Sad ending that revealed the plot behind the title, poor Watari but I guess he has Keiko. But deep down everyone knew he wasn't really in love with Watari, she did it to get close to Kousei ( kinda got a hint when one of the kids playing with Kaori slipped and said she was waiting for someone).

The letter was closure and a reveal, too bad she died though because I would have loved a physical performance between them again.
They only had that fumbling performance and most of the story was focused on Arima, and other characters especially Tsubaki's feelings.
This was a 9 before writing this but now I realized that this series was not that great but not bad, yet very good.

People mostly here who gave it a 9+ are those who were swayed by emotions and her death, and there those who gave it a less than 7 then those want to be labelled different. This anime for me deserves an 8 because the plot was a see through but enjoyable especially the first half and had that poetic sentiment and the music was really great. The art was great and characters had an impact to the viewer but I wouldn't say its the greatest anime ever, but its close and better than Clannad.

I will probably forget but its an 8 from me.

Dont know, if i were Arima i would probably not react like that. After alll this intensity, all this "all of sudden" change that she brings to him, i would probably be depressed for a long time.
But i also felt happy for him, beacuse, afterall, She just wanted do help the love of her life, and she totally did that, so He didnt wasted it, played the last music "with her" and continued to be a great painist, that inspires me, althoug is a hard bittersweat taste =x

Man... I know I've talked a lot of shit about this anime and I won't take it back because some things really did annoy me but this episode, this one fucking episode made me cry a fucking river. Seriously my shirt is all wet because I used it to blow my nose on as well. It's always these sad animes with deaths that gets me. It made me imagine the day when one of my family dies, made me remember fucking Clannad, Grave of the Fireflies, and especially Anohana, all these anime that I fucking hate to love. And then Kaori admits her lie that is obvious to everybody from the start and then she apologized for being a bitch and then they show her when she was a kid and my God she looked so adorable like an angel and then I just lost it and I cried like a pussy. Shit. Anyway, I didn't like the classical music at all and it played a big part in this anime so I can't give this a perfect score and like I said some things did annoy me that I won't bother to say but I mean what even is her illness? And Kosei's mom hitting him till he bleeds and treating him like a slave because she wanted him to be a really good pianist so he can have a great future? Wut? To be honest the only music ones that I liked were the first ending song and whatever Kaori was playing on that playground. That's about it. This show is not the greatest it has it's fair share of flaws but hell it just makes you feel things.

Finished this yesterday, so sad... :( I know that they lead us to believe Kaori would die, which is why I didn't think it would happen... Really good ending, but I can't help but feel depressed right now lol. Wish there was more closure in the ending, but the way they did it was great.

Just balled my eyes out for half an hour. I thought this show was incredibly sweet and tugged on every heart string I know.
Kind of reminds you to live life how you want to. I'm so sad Kaori passed away. I wish they could have made a happy ending.
None the less beautiful story. Simple and sweet. Loved every moment of this show

Anohana brought about a waterfall of sadness and joy. It was bitter-sweet which made it all the more memorable. Shigatsu on the other hand was pure sadness only to be curbed by a slightly bitter-sweet ending.

I initially thought that Kaori's "Lie in April" was their promise to play together again but her actual lie was something I could have never guessed. They in a way did play a final duet together so it all wasn't for nothing. 8.5/10 If only he confessed his feelings to her whilst they were hugging in the snow.

Really?

Incredibly disappointing last episode. That abstraction of her playing and bursting and whatnot was so pointless. And don't tell me that I don't understand the meaning behind it, I do, really, but it killed the entire mood for me. Everything was set up perfectly for the piano to tell the story of connection and parting, but author decided to overkill it.

Imagine him playing the ballade... and nothing else... crying at the end.. without inner monologue, everything that happened would be implied by his performance. This, plus the letter at the end would be the perfect ending for me.

Well, not everyone can be satisfied, I guess... it's such a shame, however, because everything leading to this point was executed perfectly according to my taste... ending execution ruined a masterpiece and left me cold.

I finished the series yesterday and OMG, I have never cried so hard after watching any TV show.

First, Kousei's performance and the dream duet with Kaori played was absolutely beautiful, as it was nice to see Kousei playing with her. When Kaori was starting to disappear, I instantly knew she wasn't going to live. The moments when Kousei begging for her to stay, her final smile and disappearance made me start to tear. I was instantly heartbroken when she passed, but even more heartbroken to see Kousei's tears flowing when he was done. As he was able to finish his performance despite him witnessing Kaori's disappearance.

The tears did not stop when Kousei began to read Kaori's letter, as she finally revealed her true feelings and that her liking Watari was a lie (hence "Your Lie In April". From the reveal that Kaori had a crush on him since she was little to the final "I love you", I was bawling up so much. Despite the tears that were shed, this episode closed the series off perfectly.

Beautiful ending. While the series itself did have some problems like the forced chibi over the top comedic moments and the fact that it spent a bit too much time on Tsubaki's melodramatic feelings for Kousei, I felt the last few episodes were wonderfully done.

Also, the acoustic version of Orange was great. That last shot of Kao smiling before the "Fin" end card was so heartwarming.

That last duet was so precious and heartbreaking, omg </3
I knew she would die but hope lasts until the end... so sad. But i'm glad Kousei did continue being a pianist, his development was so good. I liked his character, Kaori's as well. Tsubaki maybe could find a way to heal Kousei's heart, she deserved to be next to him too. And for Watari, I feel bad for him, he was completely used and overshadowed all the way through the end xd
Still, Kaori deserved better :(

A few things with the pacing, flashbacks, incomplete scenes, characters, felt a little odd sometimes. Also, I feel like the constant allusion to stars or sky was an overused resource.

Overall a 7/10 for me

Okay, I'm a bit disappointed by the ending. I knew that she was going to die, that much became clear from around episode 4 I believe. What annoyed me was that there was so much build-up of emotion to the last episode, also leaving the watcher still with a bit of hope because of the surgery, and then they just pass over that moment and go to when it already had happened and everyone is somewhat over it.
I understand that when they played together and Kaori disappearing at the end of the song meant she died. What to me would have been more meaningful is if they'd shown that her heart stopped by showing the machine with a flat-line, since they switches to images of her undergoing surgery before.
To me, how they did it now, you lost some of the connections you'd build up with the characters and I think that is kind of a shame.

But overall I liked the anime, very sad sometimes and I really liked the music, only the ending was a bit lacking.

The way that the episode ends is amazing but I think they could have made this end more interesting. I can't believe how much he would have gone through as the persons he loved most were always the ones to leave him. But still he had the strength to go and play there , it is just awesome. Kaori's letter explained the reason to the series. The lie she made was the most beautiful one , because it not only changed her life whereas it changed kousei's, Tsubaki's , watari etc people's life too. She lived to her fullest and made kousei to realize again that what it was to be a musician.

In the end Tsubaki and kousei ended up together as I hoped .

Perfect ending to the series. Beautiful anime.

This show is overrated. It tried doing too much and didn't have a clear identity. Was it trying to be a romance or was it more about the music? First half was great because it solely focused on the feeling of playing music and the enjoyment it brought. Then it became a melodramatic love triangle romance of middle schoolers who acted like adults. It was weird and off putting.

The ending was predictable and decent at best. This show is a 7/10 and I hope people change their scores because currently its score is overinflated.

I loved the show great story and romance and the music enhanced it so much. It gave the user a real emotional feel for the characters. I had high hopes for the ending but it was too sad. It all makes sense though and it was beautiful how Arima was able to overcome his fear. Also if any one has any anime too recommend like your lie in April ,please tell me.
