the first time i felt that way was around the mid-70's... when pads got bigger, face-masks were mandatory except for kickers AND when head-hunting became a kind of rule of the turf. Darryl Stingley paid the biggest price. (but we don't know the trickle-down effect to HS play across the country).. and then, ol' Buddy Ryan and that guy in New Orleans start putting out bounties on players... somebody once cut LT at the ankles and that was a quick mistake.

Great Video, Great Defensive Teams! I'm an old man now! But watching those Defenses hit their opponents made my heart soar! & a tear to my eye because those Football Defensive Teams won't be seen again! Not in my life time! Football is now entertainment for the TV QB's & the bar bullies! 3 hours of commercials! where between commercials sometimes a football game breaks out? TV talking heads tell you what you're seeing and the refs actually call out the penalties! Instead of when only ex players knew from the officials hand signals what the penalties were! Like a secret decoder ring! That could only be unlocked by Ex Peewee to the Pro Players! It was our game! Now it's everyone's? whether you suited up and strapped it on or not? I still love Football! And can remember when ALL coaches wore shirts, ties, sport jackets and fedoras! And head coaches would meet at mid field during warm ups shake and greet one another before the Battle! Often wondered what they really talked about? Like when Coach Halas & Coach Lombardi smiled and spoke to one another? Love watching these older Football Videos! For me? It recharges the Brain Housing Group! For the Youngins? It should be a view into the past when Football was Great and played in an Hour! Unless a bunch of penalties! Then hour & a half! CMTFU TMI!

Like this video shows, it used to be a bar fight. Now the game is more finesse. Player safety is now more of a priority.
The players are elite athletes now and science/math is an intricate part of the game like never before.

Thankfully this documentary does include actual tough teams, and omits the pretender Cowboys, who folded up like a napkin if they didn't unquestionably have the upper hand. It is interesting that the fawning over the Raiders and Jack Tatum doesn't mention Darryl Stingley. Stingley in a wheelchair is the real story of the 1970s NFL, but it is rarely mentioned - too frightening for the PR machine. Besides - the guys that returned from WWII and played in the 1950s were the actual tough guys. Those men had very different ideas about the words 'safe' and 'dangerous.'

Guess they don't handle pain very well, but Bruiser was tough as they come,he could take it lol.

Would be the elimination clothe line tackles and head shots in the hitting department.North American football-in both the U.S. and Canada- was much more an “ at your own risk “ type of game in those times. It’s truly much less so now unfortunately. And commercial breaks after change of possessions are so beyond annoying………
