I thought of making this thread so we don't spam/post the main page every time we ask or talk about a movie that is not nominated. So instead of positing there, we can all post here for better communication and response.

Having said this, has anyone seen The Life of Oharu? I just got FB feed from Criterion that it was released on Blu-Ray and DVD in USA. Has anyone seen the movie? What about other movies by Kenji Mizoguchi?

to be honest i have only heard of one film by Mizoguchi and that's the 47 ronin but some one told me that he is considered one of the masters of Japanese cinema so i would say go and get it

also Hitoshi Matsumoto is releasing a new film in October can't wait

I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

The few Mizoguchi works that I've seen, Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff, The Woman in the Rumor, Chikamatsu monogatari were all good, and I've been meaning to get around to finally watching The Life of Oharu, so it's great to see it get a criterion blu ray release.

It seems that "The Deadly Bullet" was released in China on April 19th so it probably won't make it's international run until it gets a blu-ray and or dvd release in China. But the trailer looks awesome. Thanks for the heads up Bloodlover.

Yeah it looks like a good action movie but to be honest I hope it's more than just that. I'd rather go see a random US movie if I want cheap action.

edit: I found a review of Malice Doll on Midnight Eye. Holy cows, I thought I was the only one on the planet that saw this.

I'm maybe coming late for this, but yep, I watched The life of Oharu (it's been a year though).

From my own personal point of view, it doesn't hold up to its prestige. But then again the same happened to me with the other Mizoguchi I watched, Ugetsu. On the other hand I love what I have watched form Ozu, for example. It's strange, and happens to me with other filmmakers; they are rather close in their style, but I enjoy one and dislike the other, for no further apparent reason.

Well, actually not dislike either, I still enjoy what he does to a point. In the specific case of The life of Oharu, it simply looked as a wasted opportunity to me, and the main reason lies in the storytelling. For a very heavily event-based tragedy, the events in the storyline tend to be shortened and rushed; my issue basically is that I could easily form a general view of Oharu's disgraceful life, but on the specific situations she went through at the story I couldn't care less. I found the narrative focus unsatisfying in that sense.

But anyway, watch it (if you haven't yet). I'm one against the tide after all, and many people hold it in a very high regard, it is very critically respected, etc.

A friend of mine asked me recently to introduce her to Japanese and Korean movies. She likes SF movies, Kubrick and Tarkovsky. Any ideas on where to start? I was thinking about Oldboy.

Oldboy is always a great start, perhaps Confessions, too. It's hard to think of anyone even remotely close to Kubrick, Japanese or otherwise, but you could always recommend some of the more well known auteurs such as Kitano and Kim Ki-duk. Most of the best Japanese science fiction films that come to mind to me are the classical anime titles, such Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Paprika. Some dramas such as Tokyo Sonata and All About Lily Chou-Chou would be a majestic display of Japanese film and storytelling, and if she wanted something more raw and gut-wrenching you could go for Battle Royale or Thirst. It's a difficult question, but there are a lot of gems to pick from in the featured films topic, too. I hope she enjoys whatever she ventures into, haha.

Tokyo Story was the first film I ever bought on blu-ray, haha. You definitely should, it's a classic. I imagine Yoji Yamada's Tokyo kazoku will be out soon... I wonder how it will compare.

I can't seem to find anything about a director's cut. I checked the English, American and Japanese releases but they just seemed to be the standard release with bonuses such as the making of.

Hmm, Monsterz coming out this year staring Tatsuya Fujiwara. Looks fun. Appears the remakes name is Haunters, directed by Min-suk Kim. Doesn't appear to have gotten that great of remarks but I'm going to check it out as well. Attack on Titan live action. Will check it out of simple curiosity. Thanks for the info woody.

From the director of Confessions (it was already mentioned here and MOTW. Go see it now you haven't), comes a new movie. The UK premiere will be next year sadly but it looks really interesting and the wait might just be worth.
