In the 1840's, the rent strike among the tenant farmers (aka peasants) of upstate New York changed a lot of things. It's high time for more like that...
Fun fact: Kiliaen van Rensselaer never visited any of the land that he purchased in New York. He was so rich, he bought hundreds of thousands of acres from the American Indians just because he could. And then he charged people to live there.

I just found you online. fantastic material, performance and sincerity. thank you so much for this, comrade!
It’s kind of funny that Henry Bell Van Rensselaer represented the NY 14th and today AOC does. Kind of a poetically just... anyways great song thank you for posting.
@TheBendablespoons i think she genuinly inteded to make a difference, and has in some small ways here and there. but the system will sooner change the people who join than change itself for them. im sure by the end of her career she wont recognize herself... if she stays inside the system.
This song never fails to give me pure, concentrated revolutionary drive and also quite a good mood, despite the grim topic. The tunes are just that good.
Swedish government discussing "market rents" next week, investigating the possibility of allowing landlords to take any rent without restriction for newely constructed houses, in a couple of years complete market rents will be the next step. The "tenant association" currently negotiates rents every year to make sure that they aren't raised too much (they always are), this is the only protection tenants have right now, with market rents there will be nothing stopping landlords from sucking the working class dry.
yeah, any country that does away with rent control as you're describing is doomed. they often start the process of turning their economies over to the capitalists a little at a time, like the way they started selling off public housing in england in the 80's, or the way they have done the same kind of partial lifting of rent control for certain buildings, which is how they've been doing it in new york city and berlin.
@@drovics They failed. One party who supported the forming of the current government stood up against it. They held a vote of no confidence and it worked.
Germany has the problem of no rent control, we have extremly high rents for tiny apartments in or near citys, which are unpayable exept your very rich, so it's almost impossable to get a affordable city near apartment as a regular individual, let alone as a family. This creates an extreme inequality, the rich may live in the city and the average outside, while the poor live on the street. Living in a smal village and always traveling to your workplace in the city is also not a good option, since our public transport system in rural areas is awful and expensive, going by car is often the only possibility, which expensive aswell and bad for the environment. Those who have a city near cheap apartment from the times these still exited get bullied out of the houses so the landlords and big housing comabnies can raise the rents. Just look up the avarage renting price of a square meter in Frankfurt, Munich or Berlin. I say socialize the land and housing! Socialize all services for the public, such as hospitals, energy production, waste disposal, etc.!
People of the world need to rise up, and overthrow the rich and landlords. If they don't yield, they should suffer the same fate as the workers who went on strike when the 'state' and private cops came and killed them. Take the land back from them.

Indeed. The term "communist" has become bastardised by the Red Scare to the point of being the leftist equivalent of being called a fascist. Back when I was merely a centre-left social democrat, I would always clarify that I'm not a commie myself. But now, I take being called a communist not as an insult but as a compliment, especially by the US conservatives who see anything left of centre as communist.
there are, actually. but there should be more of them, and bigger ones, full of militant people who are ready to get arrested. then we could get somewhere...
We need a full-on rent strike - landlords don't deserve to exist! They never stopped collecting (while taking all they could from the handouts the govt gave to "small businesses" & meanwhile homeowners didn't have to pay their mortgages!) even tho COVID is still ongoing, so many people continue to be evicted
