    Lyrics
They were summoned from the hillside
They were called in from the glen
And the country found them ready
At the stirring call for men
Let no tears add to their hardships
    As the soldiers pass along
And although your heart is breaking
Make it sing this cheery song:
    Keep the home fires burning
    While your hearts are yearning
Though your lads are far away
    They dream of home
    There's a silver lining
    Through the dark clouds shining
Turn the dark cloud inside out
    Till the boys come home
    Overseas there came a pleading
    "Help a nation in distress"
And we gave our glorious laddies
Honour made us do no less
For no gallant son of Freedom
To a tyrant's yoke should bend
And a noble heart must answer
To the sacred call of "Friend"
    Keep the home fires burning
    While your hearts are yearning
Though your lads are far away
    They dream of home
    There's a silver lining
    Through the dark clouds shining
Turn the dark cloud inside out
    Till the boys come home
    Keep the home fires burning
    While your hearts are yearning
Turn the dark cloud inside out
    Till the boys come home
Turn the dark cloud inside out
    Till the boys come home

The D Day Darlings have several choirs in different parts of the Midlands and I am proud to be in one of those choirs. We sometimes perform with the Darlings which is wonderful. The reason we exist is to keep the message alive. My Dad was at Dunkirk and later in Africa. He served from the first day of WW2 until the last day of the war. I think of him when I sing these songs. We must not let their bravery be forgotten. We owe them a debt that we can never repay.

The D-Day Darling gals are very very talented. I love their attitude in keeping the war songs alive, & how they respect the veterans who left their loved ones to fight for our freedom. My Grandfather was in WW1, with the British Welsh Borders, & his son (my Dad) served with the R.C.A.F. I'm so proud of everyone who served, but I'm particularly proud of my Grandfather & Dad.

This song was composed by Ivor NOVELLO, those who loved "Gosford Park", they easily recognized the melody also played in the movie, without the singing. He composed with the words of American poet Lena Guilbert FORD. I heard it for the first time, while watching "The Duchess of Duke street" series, the Duchess sang it in front of injured British soldiers. Great song and this ladies are so talented.

Although "The D-Day Darlings" are British, their music is appropriate for all allied troops who served in WW2. None of us should ever forget the sacrifices of the men and women of "the greatest generation" 80 years ago. For that matter, we should never forget the sacrifices of any of our countrymen and women who have sacrificed so much for all of us from the founding of our great country to today. Many of my family members and my wife's have served in the military for many generations going back to 1775. My wife's father was wounded (shot) five times in various campaigns in the Pacific theater during WW2. Her uncle was a pow of the Japanese for four years. The male line(s) on my side (whether grandfather(s) father(s), brother(s), uncle(s) cousin(s), etc.) have served in the US armed services every year since the Revolutionary War to this day. They served with honor to keep and protect our republic and it's people. Very appropriate song for all historical ages. Peace, blessings and, grace to all.

this was a ww1 song, are you also forgetting the hundreds of lives lost during ww1? i think ww1 is actually more significant in its outcome because it was the death of the innocent, think about how many people signed up thinking they were going on a great adventure to be stuck in a disease filled trench, pummelled with Shells and mustard Gas. also, what about the Axis lives lost? are their lives not as important because they fought for the opposing side? nov 11th is British remembrance day, but we don't just remember the lives of the allies, we remember the casualties of War, Civillian or soldier, Axis or Ally, they are all thought of.

So there's staying behind and maybe working in a Munitions factory, or staying home watching after the kids.
And then there's dodging mortar shells & 30 cal. Bullets that can shoot through a 12in. Tree trunk and still go through a piece of steel, watching your best friends and brothers getting shot and blown up having their arms, legs or head blown off right in front of you & having to pick pieces of your best friends bones, flesh and brains out of your hair and ears & wash his blood out of your clothes. And then theres the chance you could get captured and become a POW in a German/Italian/Japanese POW Camp and be worked and starved to death and possibly experimented on.
But you're probably right….. Just as heroic HAHAHA
I can just Imagine Bill Burr reading this comment and laughing his ass off!!

This is the sort of patriotic feeling that our politicians have ignored in recent times, and more especially in the last few days when they have totally and utterly failed the democratic decision of a majority, no matter how slight, of those who voted to leave the "ever closer union" of those countries against whom we were and still are fighting, although now only economically (refer to Flower of Scotland for a comparison of this) because they lack the courage and determination of their fathers, uncles, cousins, friends and acquaintances and some female members of their family who stood tall to give us all what we have today.
RIP all those who gave their life to safeguard Britain for the future, especially those from other countries of the Commonwealth and wider world, and most especially the young boys from USA who died storming those almost impregnable beaches on D-Day, yet succeeded. Thank you D-Day Darlings for reminding us all.

Why am I born as a German? I love this Song so much, have tears in my eyes and I would as well like to be patriotic and proud of my country.
I love Great Britain, the coarse humour, the landscapes from South to North, the People, even their stubbornness, the traditional food, the old cottages, almost everything. My whole life I have to apologize for the monsterous crimes my Country did in WW2. I only want to get along well with everybody. Compliment to a great Country and their great population.

You have nothing to apologise for! Germany’s part in the war was caused by the manipulation of Adolf Hitler, not by the whole country. Germany were greatly mislead in leadership because him and the Nazi’s. It’s them that should apologise, not you

You can and should be proud of Germany! Your country has contributed many great minds, scientists, and musicians to the world. I hope Germany won't only be remembered for those 6 dark years when it has hundreds of years of fascinating history. You shouldn't feel ashamed for something you had no part in.

Was in the UK during the D Day week.
They were summoned from the hillside
They were called in from the glen
And the country found them ready
At the stirring call for men
Let no tears add to their hardships
    As the soldiers pass along
And although your heart is breaking
Make it sing this cheery song
    Keep the Home Fires Burning
    While your hearts are yearning
Though your lads are far away
    They dream of home
    There's a silver lining
    Through the dark clouds shining
Turn the dark cloud inside out
    'Til the boys come home
    Overseas there came a pleading
    "Help a nation in distress."
And we gave our glorious laddies
Honour bade us do no less
For no gallant son of freedom
To a tyrant's yoke should bend
And a noble heart must answer
To the sacred call of "Friend."
    Keep the Home Fires Burning
    While your hearts are yearning
Though your lads are far away
    They dream of home
    There's a silver lining
    Through the dark clouds shining
Turn the dark cloud inside out
    'Til the boys come home

This song makes me think of the UK at war.
A young British girl sits at an open window. Over the bobbing red, white and blue of the Union Jack waving on a flagpole, she looks at the horizon with tears in her eyes. A wilting poppy is being twirled in her fingers. The grey sky is blending red and yellow with the orange sunrise. The rain is slowly stopping. Over the horizon one of the country's heroes, her lover, is fighting for freedom as a soldier in the British Army. The enemy who wants to take away all that they have.
And just as the bullets rip apart flesh of men at war thousands of miles away, her heart is being ripped apart at home. She tries to justify the reason why he is away. She knows that he sacrifices for the country. That he fights to keep her, to keep the country safe. He fights so that they can have a future, married in a democratic country. To enjoy their freedom to love each other and love the country. Yes. That sun in the distance will defeat the grey dawn. And he _will_ come home a hero. She barely manages to whisper something that is not a sob. Her broken heart flutters with hope and patriotism.
"Please be safe..." she whispers as she holds the poppy close. The rain stops.
_"Please be safe," he hisses as the battle begins. The withering barrage of artillery starts..._

I remember learning this song for a student concert for the town to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of ww1 on November 11th. we invited everyone in my town and we stood up on stage and sang classic songs from ww1 such as this, Its a long way to Tipperary, Pack up your troubles in your old kit back and a few more. a lot of the elderly broke down in tears and many of the students. I was 10 at the time and I still have fond memories. my grandma lived through ww2 and her parents were victims of the Blitz so its a very upsetting period for her, She broke down and watching it made me tear up from the stage.

I recently found out that "Keep The Home Fires Burning" was published in October 1914, just five months after the onset of World War I. The song was composed by Ivor Novello (music) and Lena Guilbert Ford (lyrics). Novello died in 1951, and became the namesake for the Ivor Novello Awards which were first given in England in 1955. The Novello Awards are a forerunner, and later equivalent, of the American Grammy Awards, which were first given in 1959.
